Loggerhead Turtle Release at First Landing State Park

9.29.13 - Fitted with a satellite tracking device, the Virginia Aquarium released a rehabbed loggerhead turtle on Saturday, September 28 at First Landing State Park. Saint Louis was found on an Ocean View beach suffering with embedded fish hooks.

If you accidently hook a turtle, the Aquarium recommends that you call the stranding response team at 757.385.7575. Don't try to remove the hook. Use a net or otherwise maneuver the turtle to the beach or safe location without pulling on the hook. Keep the turtle out of the sunlight and cover the shell with a towel until the team arrives.

Sea turtles also commonly strand on local beaches as the weather cools. Cold stunned, they may appear dead, but are not. Any distressed or dead marine animal should be reported to the Stranding Team.

To follow recently released turtles, visit Seaturtle.org. Read Les Parks' blog on the event at A Tidewater Gardener.

"Spinnaker was born in 2004 and this is its first recorded visit to Virginia Beach! We know this thanks to Humpback Whale catalogs maintained by Allied Whale and the Center for Coastal Studies."
